![]() ![]() ![]() Harlots were a HUGE "no no" for the Israelites. ![]() He was very judgmental and condescending - very much how I would expect many Christian people of today to respond if a prostitute entered their home. Poor Salmone, as hard as he tried, only made things worse.Salmone's character was also very realistic. While she wasn't a prostitute by choice in the story, she still felt that the sin she had committed was too great to be forgotten. She felt that she couldn't ever truly be completely forgiven for the wrong she had done - being a prostitute. Redemption soaked the pages and at times I felt myself on the verge of tears at the beautiful reconciliation.Rahab's character was extremely realistic. Afshar did an amazing job at keeping it clean while still portraying the life of a prostitute. It was well written and historically accurate - I was enthralled by Rahab's story. I cant put into words how much I enjoyed it. I buried myself in the book the night I received it and had it finished by morning. There are very few books that can compare to Pearl In The Sand. ![]() ![]() ![]() James insisted that writers in Great Britain and America should be allowed the greatest freedom possible in presenting their view of the world, as French authors were. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allowed him to explore the phenomena of consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. ![]() His plots centered on personal relationships, the proper exercise of power in such relationships, and other moral questions. The road saw them all, and the cohorts of the Eagles for whom all other travellers must make way. It was a busy road and saw many travellers: traders with bronze weapons and raw yellow amber in their ponies’ packs country folk driving shaggy cattle or lean pigs from village to village sometimes a band of tawny-haired tribesmen from farther west strolling harpers and quack-oculists too, or a light-stepping hunter with huge wolf-hounds at his heel and from time to time a commissariat wagon going up and down to supply the Roman frontier post. From the Fosseway westward to Isca Dumnoniorum the road was simply a British trackway, broadened and roughly metalled, strengthened by corduroys of logs in the softest places, but otherwise unchanged from its old estate, as it wound among the hills, thrusting farther and farther into the wilderness. ![]() ![]() I never felt connected to the characters, but I enjoyed the faerie court intrigue and politics and all the scheming and twistiness, and the first book had me curious enough to continue the series. In The Cruel Prince, a human raised in the faery realm is tormented by the fae and realizes the only way she’s going to belong there is to be more like them and to snatch up the opportunity for power when she gets it. The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air Book 1) by Holly Black ![]() *Quick Reviews are posts where I share summaries and links for reviews I’ve recently posted to Goodreads and Amazon but don’t plan to make full review posts for here on the blog. Anyway, here are the links for the three main books in the series, plus some extras! I enjoyed some the complex family relationships and twisty court intrigue, at least. I was probably being a bit nice with my 3.5 star ratings, now that I think back on it, but that’s fine. ![]() ![]() ![]() I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I wasn’t a big fan. This time for my quick reviews I have the Folk of the Air series by Holly Black! (Minus The Lost Sisters, which will be in a separate post since it’s a short story.) If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a YA series about a human raised in the fae realm. ![]() ![]() Honestly, for the first time ever, I am going to praise about the book's look-and-feel instead of its content! The plot could have been very enchanting and interesting because I felt the author's story telling was quite articulate. Well the story is mostly a corny love-story, where girl-meets-boy and falls in love in the very first sight! However, unfortunately evil magic curses their fate! Wow now that really sounds like a fairy tale! It was almost as if they were the cursed lovers in the old book itself. When Brendan Thorne handed her a medieval romance, he did not know it would change the course of his future. When Evelyn Morgan walked into the village bookstore, she did not know she would meet the love of her life. ![]() And a uniquely crafted book that binds their stories forever. Another interesting thread is the relationship she paints between Anne and her sister, Mary Boleyn, who preceded her as Henry’s mistress. ![]() This could be seen as anachronistic, yet Weir’s extensive research gives it a solid historical basis. Her early immersion in the Renaissance courts of Flanders and France in the retinues of two of the most powerful women of the early sixteenth century give her a challenging approach to conventional views on women’s roles. Did Henry love her, or was he just not used to being denied? How did Anne really feel?Īlison Weir combines her wealth of historical knowledge, culled from many years of research into the period, with a story-telling ability that has held millions enthralled, to give a new take on the story. So many books have been written about Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, both fiction and non-fiction, that you may think it would be hard to say anything new, yet despite all the analysis and speculation the real nature of their feelings remains elusive and open to debate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Chief Inspector Gamache presses for information, Myrna is reluctant to reveal her friend's name.
